The Paranormal Dictionary

A

Agent - A living person who is the focus poltergeist activity.

Afterlife - The belief that the human sould or spirit or spirit energy survives after the physical body expires. The continuation of life after death.

Alien - Sometimes referred to as extraterrestrials. A life form that is believed to originate and exists beyond the planet Earth.

Alien Abduction - The act of being taken against ones will by beings from other planets or galaxies.

Amorphous - Matter or energy that has no definitive shape or form.

Angels - In Christian beliefs, Angels are a spiritual or celestial being who are superior to humans in power and intelligence. Messengers from God; protectors of mankind. Angels are said to assist mortals in their transition to the afterlife.

Anomaly - Anything that deviates from the realm of normal. That which is not easily classified as normal.

Apparition - The spirit image of a person or animal that is able to materialize despite the lack of a physical body. Apparitions may appear solid, mist-like, shadow-like or opaque.

Apport - A physical object that can materialize in the presence of a Medium.

Astral Projection - An out-of-body experience (OBE); the act of leaving the body temporarily via lucid dreaming or meditation.

Astral Plane - A dimension or world that is believed to exist beyond our own world.

Astrology - The theory and practice of the positions and aspects of celestial bodies; the belief that the stars may influence the course of natural earthly occurences, the physical and emotional bodies of humans.

Attachment - The theory that a spirit may become attracted in some way to a living human and begin to co-exist with or within the person. Attachments are more common among paranormal researchers. Attachment can be by benevolent or manevolent spirits, or demons.

Aura - Energy, or the radiation of energy from a human or living thing. Aura's are seen on colors, and are said to represent the person emotions, health, and spirituality.

Automatism - The unconscious or involuntary muscular movement said to be caused by spirits.

B

Banishing - A procedure of casting away unwanted spirits or energy from a person or place.

Banshee - An omen in Irish Folklore that is said to prewarn of an impending death. Often depicted as a "troll", hear singing and/or wailing. The Banshee is said to have the ability to appear in two places at the same time.

Benign Spirit - A spirit that is not harmful or has no ill intent.

Bigfoot - The star of Cryptozoology Research. A bulky, hair-covered human-like which appears to possess both human and animal charecteristics. Often encountered or seen in wooded areas.

C

Channeling - The process of receiving, processing and relaying outside information from an outside entity, often while in a medatative state.

Clairaudience - Information received outside the range of normal human perception through voices, whispers, music, and other audio impressions.

Clairsentience - Information received outside the range of normal human perception through scents, smells and physical sensations.

Clairvoyance - Literally meaning "clear seeing". The ability to receive information from an object, person, location, or event through abilities beyond the five senses.

Cleansing - A procedure used to rid a person or place from unwanted energies.

Cold Spot - An unexplainable, unnatural cold area within an environment that is otherwise warm, or with a natural temperature. It is theorized that spirits will draw from available energy in order to manifest or communicate, thus drawing from the energy in the air and leaving the area cold.

Collective Apparition - The sighting of or encounter with a spirit that is witnessed by more than one person.

Crisis Apparition - An apparition that is seen when a person is in danger, ill, or near death.

Cryptid - Legendary creatures that are suspected to exist, though no scientific proof is available to conform the existence.

Cryptozoology - The study of creatures whose existence is not yet proven by science; i.e., Bigfoot, Chupacabra, Swamp Ape, The Jersey Devil, etc.

D

Deja Vu - The overwhelming feeling of familiarity with a person or location that one has not excountered before.

Demon - A hostile, resentful, danferous entity not if human origin.

Disembodied Voice - Also known as EVP or Electronic Voice Phenomena, a voice that has no apparent origin in the physical world.

Divination - The act of being able to obtain details on future events via unknown sources.

E

Earthbound - Earthbound refers to a spirit that was unable to cross over at the time of passing.

Ectoplasm - The physical manifestation of a spirit, usually in a mist-like form.

EMF (Electromeganetic Field) Detector - A meter not built for use in paranormal investigations, but used generally by electricians. It has been adapted by paranormal investigators under the theory that a spirit emits an electromagnetic field, thus alledgedly enable the investigator to "pinpoint" the location of a spirit.

Elemental - Non-human spirits that reside within the four earthly elements; air, fire water and earth. A Faerie is an example of an elemental.

EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) - Voices or sounds not physically heard by those present, but are recoded on an audio device.

EMF (Electromagnetic Field) - A field of energy produced by electrically charged objects, such as a fuse box or computer. It is also theorized that spirits emit an electromagnetic field.

Empath - A person who is sensitive to the psychic emanation of their environment, even to the extent pf physically and emotionally experiencing the feelings of others in their proximity.

Entity - A human, animal or non-human spirit.

Evocation - The act of summoning a spirit, demon, god or other supernatural agent. Generally associated with occult practices and witchcraft.

Exorcism - A ceremony (generally a religious ceremony) performed to rid a person or location of demonic entities.

Extraterrestrial (ET) - Life forms originating from planets or galaxies other than our own. Also referred to as Aliens.

F

False Awakening - A false awakening occurs when a person blieves they are awake but are actually sleeping.

Faerie - A tiny being in human form, depicted as clever, mischievous, and possessing magical powers.

Frank's Box - A tool to further EVP research developed by Frank Sumption. Also known as "The Telephone to the Dead". The box continuously scans radio frequencies, creating white noise, which is said to assist spirits in communicating verbally.

G

Ghost - A rather generic term referring to spirits and the apparition thereof.

Ghoul - A parasitic entity that allegedly feeds off human remains. Many living people have been termed "ghouls" for crimes commited against the deceased.

H

Haunted - A person, place or an object to which a spirit is attached. Haunted generally refers to an environment.

Haunting - A broad term for paranormal phenomena, including apparitions, sounds, smells, cold spots or other sensations that occur over a period of time in a location.

Htpnosis - A technique that induced a sleep-like state in which the subject is more oprn to external suggestions.

I

Incubus - A demonic entity capable of arousing and assulting women, though cases with male victims have also been reported.

Intelligent Haunting - Paranormal activity that is the result of an intelligent or cognizent spirit.

Intuition - Knowledge that is gained through a perceptive insight. Also called a "gut feeling".

Levitation - The suspension of a person or object in the air without any visible physical means.

Lucid Dreaming - A dream state in which one is conscious enough to realize that they are dreaming, and they are then able to control the dream events.

Lycanthropy - Also studied by Cryptozoologists. The physical transformation of a person into the form of a wolf.

M

Manevolent - Spirits with ill intent.

Manifestation - The appearence of, ot the taking form of an entity.

Marian Apparition - An event in which the Virgin Mary is seen.

Materialization - The visible, physical formation of a spirit.

Matrixing - The natural propensity of the human mind to rationalize sensory input to make more sense. An example is children who "see circus animals" in the clouds.

Metaphysics - The study of that which is beyond the laws of physics.

Mist - Generally a photographed anomaly that appears in a mist-like form. Also referred to as ectoplasm.

N

Near Death Experience (NDE) - Experiences of people after they have been clinically dead or very close to death.

Necromancy - A type of divination untilized through the summoning of the dead.

O

Occultism - The knowledge and practice of hidden and mysterious forces.

Orb - Generally a photographic anomaly that theoretically represent a spirit energy. Orbs appear in photographs as balls of light that were not seen at the time the photgraphs was taken. Most orbs can be attributed to environmental sources, such as moisture, dust, dander and insects.

Ouija BoardA tool used for channeling spirits via a wooden board and a planchette. The planchette is pirportedly moved by spirits answering participants questions.

Out-of-Body-Experience (OBE) - The experience of a living persons energy departing the body with the ability to travel to different locations.

P

Paranormal - An experience that is beyond the range of normal human experience or scientific explanation.

Parapsychology - The study of the paranormal.

Pendulum - One of the oldest known forms of divination. The pendulum consists of a weighted object (usually a chrystal or stone) at the end of a cord or chain. When held at one end, the weighted object will move in various pattenersn to indicate responses to questions being asked.

Percipient - A person who sees, or perceives, and apparition.

Phantom - Something that is seen, heard, felt and sensed, but has no physical reality.

Poltergeist - An entity that literally translates to "noisy ghost". Traditional poltergeist activity includes loud bangs and thumps, the levitation or moving of object, throwing stones and fires. Most poltergeist activity can generally be traced to to subconscious by an adolescent agent, generally women under the age of 25. However, cases that involve male agents have also been documented.

Possession - To gain control over something or someone else. A person can be possessed by an unknown entity.

Precognition - Direct knowledge or perceptions of future events obtained through extra-sensory means.

Premonition - The feeling or sensing that something is going to happen.

Psi - A letter in the Greek alphabet that denotes psychic phenomena.

Psychic - A person with the ability to foretell future events.

Psychokinesis (PK) - The ability of the mind to affect matter without physical contact.

Psychometry - The ability of divining information about people or events associated with an object solely by touch that object.

Pyrokinesis - The ability to unconsciously to control and produce fire with the use of the mind.

Q

Radio Voice Phenomena (RVP) - Receiving the voices of the deceased via the bands on a radio.

Reciprocal Apparition - A very rare type of spirit phenomenon in which both the agent and the percipient are able to see and respond to each other.

Reincarnation - The theory that one returns to physical foem after death more than once during eternity.

Remote Viewing - A technique used by some psychics in which the psychic attempts to become physically aware and in tune with the experiences of an agent who is at a distance.

Residual Haunting - A haunting that is said to be replayed much like a video in which no intelligent spirit is involved. Theory states that an imprint of the past can be left in certain locations and continues to replay. Another theory is that the experience of a residual haunting may coincide with a specific date or other emotionally charged events.

Retrocognition An experience in which a person finds themselves in the past and able to see and experience events to which they had no prior knowledge.

S

Seance A group of people, generally gathered around a table, attempting to colelctively communicate with the dead.

Shape Shifting - The ability to assume the form of another person, animal or entity.

Simulcra - Similar to matrixing, this word is used to describe the seeing of faces in ordinary object, generaly nature object, such as foilage, rock, trees, etc.

Sleep ParalysisA state of unconsciousness. Seeming to be awake but unable to move.

Specter - An apparition.

Spirit - Spirits are the energy, or soul, of a person who is deceased that exists in a realm that can only been seen under certain circumstances or by people with psychic/medium abilities.

Stigmata - Unexplained marks on a person's body corresponding to the Crucifixion woulds of Jesus Christ.

Subliminal Perception - Perceiving without conscious awareness.

>b>Subjective Apparitions - Hallucinations of apparitions or other paranormal phenomena created by the human mind.

Succubus - A demonic entity said to inspire lust in men and then assulting them. Cases involving women have also been documented.

Supernatural - Relating to an existence outside the natural world. Unlike the term "paranormal", supernatural often denotes divine or demonic intervention.

T

Telekinesis - The ability to move objects solely by the power of the mind.

Telepathy - The ability to communicate directly in mind-to-mind contact and receive information from another's mind without the use of the five senses.

Teleportation - A method of transportation in which solid matter is dematerialized at one point and recreated in another.

thought Form - An apparition produced by the power of the human mind.

U

UFO - An Unidentified Flying Object which is theorized to be the transpotation of aliens from other planets or galaxies.

V

Vortex - In theory, this is a vehicle to transport spirits from their dimension to ours. Sometimes seen as a swirling shape when in motion. Other times seen as a long, narrow opening with a thread-like design.

W

White Noise - A hissing sound produced by combining audible frequencies.

Wraith - The image of a person appearing shorty before of after their death.
