About Kentucky

Before Kentucky became the 15th state on June 1, 1792, primarily Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Shawnee people lived on the land. Daniel Boone led the way for European settlers, including Abraham Lincoln's family. Although Kentucky remained part of the Union in the Civil War, families were torn between the Confederate and Union sides.
In addition to historical attractions, Kentucky is known for its horse farms and the most famous horse race in the United States, the Kentucky Derby. Tourists interested in other natural attractions may visit Cumberland Gap, explore Mammoth Cave, the longest recorded cave system in the world, or hike in the 700,000-acre Daniel Boone National Forest.
