About Michigan

Michigan is composed of two peninsulas — the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula — linked by a 5-mile suspension bridge across the Straits of Mackinac.

With coastlines along four of the Great Lakes, Michigan is made up of around half water, half land. Thousands of lakes, including the inland 31-square-mile Houghton Lake, and over thirty-thousand miles of streams and rivers contribute to the watery terrain. The shoreline stretches for 3,300 miles, making the state an attractive summer destination for mid-westerners and Canadians.

Detroit is Michigan's largest city and the historical site for Henry Ford's automobile company.
