About New Jersey

New Jersey was an important battleground during the Revolutionary War, and this small colony won statehood on December 18, 1787. Since then, the third state has grown to become the most populated state per square mile in the whole country. New York City to the northeast and Philadelphia to the southwest, as well as Atlantic City to the southeast, have each contributed to the built-up urban areas in New Jersey.

However, "The Garden State" is also known for the New Jersey Shore, where vacationers and summer home owners enjoy beaches, boardwalks, and outdoor recreation. The Great Swamp and Appalachian Mountains in northern New Jersey and the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey remind everyone that New Jersey has its share of wilderness.
