About Virginia
Prior to the English settlement of Jamestown in 1607, the Powhatan and Algonquian tribes occupied the Virginia region. As one of the original colonies, Virginia joined the union as the 10th state on June 25, 1788. During the Civil War, separation over the issue of slavery resulted in the birth of West Virginia in 1863. Virginia joined the Confederacy, and saw General Lee surrender at the end of the war.
